Learning templates from fuzzy examples in structural pattern recognition

    Get PDF
Fuzzy-Attribute Graph (FAG) was proposed to handle fuzziness in the pattern primitives in structural pattern recognition. FAG has the advantage that we can combine several possible definition into a single template. However, the template require a human expert to define. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that can; from a number of fuzzy instances, find a template that can be matched to the patterns by the original matching metric.published_or_final_versio

Off-line Chinese handwriting recognition using multi-stage neural network architecture

    Get PDF
In this paper, we propose a Multi-stage Neural Network Architecture (MNNA) which integrates several neural networks and various feature extraction approaches into a unique pattern recognition system. General mechanism for designing the MNNA is presented. A three-stage fully connected feedforward neural networks system is designed for Handwritten Chinese Character Recognition (HCCR). Different feature extraction methods are employed at each stage. Experiments show that the three-stage neural network HCCR system has achieved impressive performance and the preliminary results are very encouraging.published_or_final_versio

Subband image coding using filter banks with non-uniform passband distribution

    Get PDF
In this paper, subband filter banks with non-uniform passband distribution in frequency domain are studied. Several design examples are presented and compared with conventional uniform bandwidth filter banks. Image coding results show that filter banks with non-uniform bandwidth outperform filter banks with uniform bandwidth, especially in low bit rate coding.published_or_final_versio

Symmetric extension methods for M-channel linear-phase perfect-reconstruction filter banks

    Get PDF
The symmetric extension method has recently been shown to be an efficient way for subband processing of finite-length sequences. This paper presents an extension of this method to general linear-phase perfect-reconstruction filter banks. We derive constraints on the length and symmetry polarity of the permissible filter banks and propose a new design algorithm. In the algorithm, different symmetric sequences are formulated in a unified form based on the circular-symmetry framework. The length constraints in symmetrically extending the input sequence and windowing the subband sequences are investigated. The effect of shifting the input sequence is included. When the algorithm is applied to equal-length filter banks, we explicitly show that symmetric extension methods can always be constructed to replace the circular convolution approach.published_or_final_versio
